10 Ways To Get Intimate While On Your Period

Can you have sex on your period and should you? Having an orgasm isn’t just pleasurable, it can also help get rid of cramps and potentially shorten the length of your period. Healthwise, it’s potentially one of the best times of the month to make love, but there are still plenty of women who refuse to do it. Whether or not you’re comfortable with doing the deed while Aunt Flo is visiting, there are plenty of things you can do to get intimate with your boyfriend while you have your period.

  1. Have sex in the shower. It’s time to relocate from the bedroom to the bathroom. That way, you won’t have to worry about staining your sheets or your clothes because the water will wash all of the blood away. Then you can make love all you’d like and won’t have to clean up a mess after you’re finished. Sex on your period doesn’t have to be disastrous.
  2. Use your mouth on him instead of receiving it. Your partner probably won’t want to use his mouth on you while you’re bleeding, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it for him. Your period is the perfect time to do this. Just make sure that he returns the favor when that time of the month comes to an end.
  3. Try anal sex. If you don’t want him to touch the area of your body that’s bleeding, then you can let him touch the next best thing. Even though making love via the back door was once considered taboo, anal sex is becoming more and more popular. If you want to give it a try, your period is the perfect time to do so.
  4. Let him touch you through your clothes. Virgins aren’t the only ones who can enjoy dry humping and a little heavy petting over the clothes. If you want to keep your pants on, you can ask your boyfriend to touch you over your jeans or at least over your underwear. That way, there’s no way for things to get messy but you’ll still feel that sweet sensation.
  5. Get out the dark sheets. If you still want to have sex in your bed while on your period, you should put down a sheet or a towel you don’t mind getting dirty. Of course, you should throw it in the wash as soon as you’re done. If your partner is a bit squeamish, then he should remember to wear protection to keep himself clean, as well.
  6. Have phone sex. If you usually only text, your boyfriend will be surprised to see your name pop up on his home phone. He’ll be even more surprised when you start moaning into the receiver and telling him what you want him to do to you. If you’re lucky, he’ll actually do those things as soon as your period ends. Phone sex is awkward, but once you get into it, it’s pretty great.
  7. Give him a blow job. Sex is about the two of you, but sometimes it’s okay to please your boyfriend while you’re on your period. He can owe you one later. He’ll likely appreciate you going down on him, especially if you initiate it.
  8. Send him suggestive pictures. If you refuse to have sex on your period, your time of the month is the perfect time for a little fun. Need a few ideas? You can send naughty text messages and pictures to your guy in order to get him excited to see you. The longer that temptation lasts, the more eager you’ll be to get close the next time you see each other. Just make sure you follow some basic rules for sending nudes!
  9. Make out with him for hours. It’s time to pretend that you’re teenagers again. Engage in an hour-long make-out session that ends without making love. As long as you both know that the kissing isn’t going to turn into anything else, it should help you learn to enjoy the little moments instead of waiting for what they’re leading up to.
  10. Just cuddle. Making love and intimacy aren’t interchangeable. If you want to feel close to your partner but aren’t comfortable taking off your clothes during that time of the month, then you can snuggle up on the couch while watching a movie. Even something as simple as having a late-night chat about your hopes and dreams can be considered intimate.

Why you shouldn’t avoid intimacy during your period

Many people just aren’t down with period sex or are nervous about trying it. If you have a partner who’s mature about bodily functions, however, it could actually be a really great experience and a more normal one than you’d expect. Not only that, but it comes with some pretty great benefits too.

  1. There’s really not that much blood. Unless you have extremely heavy flows or it’s the first day or so of your period, it’s not like you’re going to be flooding all over the place while you and your partner get intimate. Sometimes we build it up in our head that it’s going to be way grosser or messier than it is. And hey, even if it does get a little mucky, you can just grab a towel, throw the sheets in the wash, and hop in the shower.
  2. It can help relieve cramps. Because your pelvic muscles contract and release during orgasm, having sex can actually help to reduce the cramps you experience during your period. “It always amazes me how few people take advantage of sex during their period,” Aline P. Zoldbrod, a psychologist and sex therapist based in Boston, told Health. “Sex makes you feel good, plus, I think it’s the best thing in the world for your cramps.”
  3. You can take advantage of your increased libido. If you have an extremely high sex drive during your period, you’ll know exactly what I mean here. While for many women, this time of the month is a no-go for intimacy, why shouldn’t you and your partner take advantage of this sexy time of the month? By having sex on your period, you’re giving yourself a whole other week (or extra few days, if you have a shorter cycle) to get down and dirty with your partner.
  4. There’s plenty of natural lubrication. No need to bust out the lube when you’re getting intimate while on your period. Instead, you can rely on the natural lubrication provided by your menstrual cycle to help you out on this.
  5. It can bring you and your partner closer together. Experiencing intimacy while menstruating shows a serious level of trust between you as a couple. It shows that you feel comfortable enough to be fully exposed to one another and to accept one another’s inherent humanity. After all, periods are a normal bodily function for people with female reproductive organs, so feeling okay with getting close to each other during this time may just serve as a bonding experience.
  6. If men had periods, getting busy while they had theirs would be a no-brainer. Seriously. Just think if men were the ones who had periods and women held off on sex when they had theirs because it was “gross.” It would never happen! There’s no reason you should feel ashamed of your body. Embrace it and have fun.
