What You Need To Know About Dating A Workaholic

A workaholic is someone who’s literally addicted to work — they live and breathe for it. Unfortunately, as admirable as it can be on paper, that drive to succeed can end up ruining the possibility for a good relationship. Here’s what you should know before you date a woman who’s obsessed with her job:

  1. She can pamper you way more than others can. Let’s face it — someone living on minimum wage won’t be able to give you a vacation to Tokyo once a year. Someone who can barely pay rent won’t be able to afford a Michael Kors watch for a Valentine’s Day present. So, if there’s any serious perk to dating a workaholic, it’s that she has the ability to shower you in expensive gifts. This shouldn’t be the reason you’re together, but it doesn’t hurt.
  2. She’s often scarily focused and very motivated. She’s the kind of person who moves mountains when she makes a decision. No one, absolutely no one, can stop a workaholic from achieving her goals. This can make things easy in relationships, since she’ll often go the extra mile to make sure she gets her and your needs met.
  3. You’ll always be in second place. Unfortunately, you’ll always come second to her career. This means that you can almost always expect missed dates, and dinners cut short because of her work responsibilities. If you aren’t OK with having a woman who will work 10 or 12 hour days most days of the week, this may end up being a major dealbreaker.
  4. The easiest way to impress a workaholic is with your own work ethic. Career women like career men. This is how power couples often are made, in many cases, so it’s safe to say that workaholics tend to date one another. This is often the best possible pairing for them.
  5. She often sees her self-worth in her work. In other words, a bad day at work might end up affecting your relationship. She may be unable to feel confident in bed if she gets yelled at during the work day. No amount of consoling and cuddling will make her feel better if the problem started at work.
  6. 6. If you want to make a workaholic happy, be a positive influence on her career. Seriously, this is the best way to improve a workaholic’s view of you. Show her that you’re her cheerleader. Show her that you can help her make the best out of her career, and that you can help her network. That’s the kind of thing that workaholics really dig.
  7. You will learn to hate her phone. Workaholics are never away from work, at least mentally. This means that she’ll be texting and typing away on her iPhone long after their shift has been finished at work. If she gets a call from the boss, that means that you’ll have to deal with it.
  8. The high work stress she often deals with makes her have hair trigger tempers. Not all of us are like this, but there’s enough hot-headed type-A workaholics to make this a general trend to watch out for. If you notice her having serious problems with snapping at you over small things, you may want to back away from the relationship before it gets really bad.
  9. She may have a hard time seeing the forest for the trees if she’s too focused on work. There’s an old song that discusses what happens when people “pave paradise to put up a parking lot.” If you’re with someone who’s too focused on her career, your ability to maintain a relationship with her will suffer. She may not even actually openly appreciate all that you do for her. More often than not, the best way to deal with this is to give her a harsh reality check.
  10. You might even get jealous on her boss. It sucks when you feel like your partner’s boss has a closer relationship to her than you do, but it can happen if you’re dating someone addicted to her career. If it’s gotten to this point, you’re going to have to wonder whether it’s actually worth dating her at all.
  11. It’s not for everyone. A person who is dating a serious workaholic is generally only going to be happy if they’re a workaholic too. You’ll end up having to deal with your partner being unavailable if you’re dealing with a workaholic. However, you’ll likely have a cushy lifestyle. It’s up to you to decide whether the trade-off is worth it.
  12. You’ll be proud of her all the time. There’s something to be said about dating a true boss bitch, and that’s that you’ll love the way you can boast about her accomplishments.
