This ‘Home Alone’ Gingerbread Mansion Took More Than 300 Hours To Make

Without a doubt, Home Alone is the quintessential Christmas movie. I’ve watched it pretty much every year since childhood and I don’t think I’ll ever stop. Incidentally, unless you buy or rent it (or already own it), the only place to stream the movie this year is via Disney+, and to celebrate the movie’s addition to the popular platform, Disney decided to commission a gingerbread version of the infamous Home Alone mansion. Needless to say, it’s an absolute masterpiece.

  1. Food artist and sugar sculptor Michelle Wibowo is behind the stunning scene. She’s award-winning in her field, which explains why Disney would trust her to bring the Home Alone mansion to life.
  2. It’s made out of gingerbread! Knowing that Kevin McAllister’s house is actually made out of gingerbread here is enough to put us all to shame! Not only did she create the house itself, she also added in some extra special touches from the movie.
  3. It took more than 300 hours to create. As you can probably imagine, bringing the Home Alone mansion to life in gingerbread form and including such intricate detail is a time-consuming process, and Wibowo spent more than 300 hours on the structure and its 33 windows, 63 trees, 14 pizza boxes, and six lamposts. There’s even Kevin himself face-down in the snow after riding his sled down the stairs, and the Wet Bandits, Harry and Marv. The Little Nero’s pizza delivery car is there as well as the Oh-Kay plumbing fan belonging to the robbers. In other words, it’s chock full of details.
  4. The house is currently on display in the UK. At the moment, the Home Alone mansion is being displayed at the Oak Centre for Children and Young People at The Royal Marsden in Surrey for young patients and their families, which is pretty great. And despite all the long hours and hard work it took, Wibowo was thrilled at the opportunity to take part in something so special. “I jumped at the chance because it is one of my favorite Christmas movies,” she told the Evening Standard. “It doesn’t really feel like Christmas in our house until we have seen it at least twice.” Same!
