Drinking Beer Is The Secret To A Long Life, Says 102-Year-Old Woman

We all want to live long, healthy lives but how to do it is another question altogether. Should we go vegan? Take supplements? Avoid men? There are as many different answers to the question of how to prolong our lives, but I’m pretty partial to what this 102-year-old woman has to say about the matter.

  1. Apparently, drinking beer is the key. Mildred Bowers, called Millie by her friends, lives in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and is about to be 103 years old. That’s definitely impressive, and pretty much everyone wants to know how she’s gotten this far. Her answer? Drinking beer every day!
  2. Having a pint or two hasn’t really hurt her. Millie loves beer and while excessive drinking can be seriously detrimental to your health, a single drink a day hasn’t done her any harm. Every day at 4 p.m. at the assisted living facility she resides in, Millie is allowed to have a beer. She thinks you should too, saying, “Have a beer, doctor’s orders.” Can’t argue with that!
  3. Even a doctor has cleared her daily beer habit. When she brought up her desire for a beer a day with some nurses at her facility, they decided to talk to a doctor before they said yes. Millie was ultimately given the all-clear, and thus her daily tipple began.
  4. Millie knows what she’s talking about. Being nearly 103 years old means that Millie has lived through some major events, from the Great Depression and World War II to the death of two of her husbands. It’s amazing to think how many things she’s seen over the years, but I’m inclined to trust the wisdom she’s gained throughout her lifetime.
  5. Of course, she may have a little advantage… “It’s all in the genes. I feel okay because I’m in good health,” she says. “My mind is good, I have no problem with that and that’s the big thing that a lot of people my age don’t have at my age is a good mind,” Bowers said.
  6. If you don’t like beer, that’s OK—drink what you like. Millie knows that not everyone is a fan of beer but she says that it’s really all about finding a beverage you like and taking the time to sit and enjoy drinking it every day. “Look, there are people who don’t like coffee and people who don’t like tea, but I want everyone to drink what they like,” she explains. I think I’ll take her advice.
