There’s A Hotel Shaped Like An Anus — Would You Stay There?

I consider myself a pretty adventurous traveler. I won’t be scaling any mountains anytime soon, but I enjoy staying in unconventional locations and doing unique activities while I’m away. However, while I’m super intrigued by the idea of staying at a hotel shaped like an anus, I’m not sure if I could actually go through with it. (I probably could.)

Read on to find out more about the hotel and how to stay there as well as to see some incredible pictures of the place.

  1. It’s called CasAnus. Created by a Dutch artist named Joep van Lieshout, the hotel sits in the middle of a beautiful open field in Belgium, on an island halfway between Ghent and Antwerp. It was created in 2007 and remains there today, accepting regular visitors.
  2. The work of art was commissioned by the Verbeke Foundation Sculpture Park. Yes, this is art, and it exists among a 30-acre plot of private artworks owned by Geert and Carla Verbeke-Lens. Roughly 200 guests per year come to stay in the CasAnus, which is a number that seems shockingly low.
  3. It only costs about $165 a night. That’s a total steal given the uniqueness of the accommodation and the natural beauty of the location. Staying there gets you a double bed, a shower, and central heating, not to mention usage of the BarRectum, which is a bar that is shaped like the large intestine. Classy!
  4. There was actually a serious inspiration behind this project. As van Lieshout told VICE, CasAnus was the result of his exploration of systems, from economical and political to that of the human body, the latter of which he considers to be “a perfect system.” He explained, “From 2005 to 2008, I made a series of works which represented the human body, but also a complete series of human internal organs, ranging from heart and brain to liver, rectum and male and female sex organs. The CasAnus is part of that series and takes its shape from the human digestive system. Starting with the tongue, continuing to the stomach, moving through the small and the large intestine and exiting through the anus.”
  5. The park is closed for the winter, but you can check back come spring. You’ll want to book ahead for his hilarious experience. When else will you get to stay in a butt?
