12 Internal Struggles of Every Makeup Junkie

For some people, makeup is an addiction – luckily, a relatively harmless one, so long as you know how to control yourself. Sometimes it seems like there’s a tug of war going on inside of you over whether you really need yet another tube of red lipstick. As every makeup junkie knows, you can never have enough lipstick… but sometimes your bank account begs to differ. It may be time to be a little more selective about your makeup purchases, which is a bit easier said than done. Here are 12 struggles every makeup junkie deals with on a daily basis.

  1. Wondering if you should take the long way home so you don’t have to walk past Sephora. You know if you’re close enough to smell the perfume samples, you’ll be helpless to stop your legs from taking you right through those big double doors.
  2. Knowing you should really cut back on your beauty box subscriptions. Ipsy, Birchbox, Julep, GlossyBox… the choices are endless. Sure, sometimes you get stuff you don’t really need, but the excitement of getting that box in the mail and not knowing what will be inside makes you feel like a kid again.
  3. Nail polish doesn’t count as makeup, right? You’ve already obliterated your makeup budget for the month, but that new Essie color would match your new skirt flawlessly.
  4. Finding out your new favourite MAC lipstick is, of course, limited edition. Do you charge a bunch of tubes to your credit card like you do when deodorant goes on sale? Or should you just let the color go, and move on to the next one?
  5. Determining when you’ve spent too much time mastering the perfect “natural look”. It’s supposed to look effortlessly flawless, but it’s kind of counterproductive if I spend too much effort on it.
  6. Realizing beautiful skin is more about maintenance than choosing the perfect foundation shade. When you eat right, cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize regularly and don’t pick at your face, your skin ends up looking a million times better than when you have to load on a layer of primer, foundation, and powder to hide all the imperfections. Taking care of your skin may mean less makeup, but that’s a good thing. Really.
  7. Deciding between the drugstore mascara or the Dior one that’s triple the price. You can get away with using drugstore mascara most of the time, and obviously no one else can tell it’s Maybelline and not Dior. But you know. And isn’t that what matters?
  8. The crippling indecision. There are endless choices. Endless. You could stand in the makeup aisle comparing the packaging of two different brands of eyeshadow all you want, but that isn’t going to tell you what the colour looks like on your face.
  9. Losing an entire Saturday morning watching Youtube tutorials. Now you only have a few hours to run all those errands, because you have to give yourself enough time to perfect the purple cat eye for your girl’s night tonight.
  10. Deciding what to leave behind when you’re packing light. You won’t really need lipstick on your weekend camping trip, let’s be honest. But it’s nice to have at least one tube, just in case.
  11. Feeling sad that you can’t seem to contour without looking like a mad person. All you want is to have the cheekbones of a Kardashian, is that so much to ask? But all you see when you look at contouring diagrams is the rough draft of a comic book character.
  12. The hassle of taking all that makeup off at night. You’re already snuggled into bed and are about to drift off to sleep when you realize you still have makeup on. Since you aren’t one of those people who gets by on a little BB Cream and a single coat of mascara, you absolutely must get up and watch your face, no matter how tired you are.
